Accra, Ghana — The World College of Mayors (WCM) has commenced high-level engagements with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) to develop a comprehensive strategic plan aimed at promoting Ghana’s tourism sector through international city diplomacy and global partnerships.
The initiative follows a strategic meeting between Dr. Manohar Roy, Global Operations Director of the World College of Mayors, and Mr. Ben Anane Nsia, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, in Accra. The discussions focused on strengthening collaboration to position Ghana as a preferred destination for cultural, heritage, business, and experiential tourism.
Key areas explored during the meeting included international destination marketing, the promotion of Ghana’s cultural and historical assets, mayor-to-mayor tourism cooperation, and the use of global city networks to attract tourists, investors, and cultural exchanges.
Mr. Ben Anane Nsia underscored the importance of strategic partnerships in advancing Ghana’s tourism development agenda, noting that coordinated engagement with international institutions and city leaders can significantly enhance Ghana’s visibility on the global tourism map.
Speaking on the collaboration, Dr. Manohar Roy highlighted the unique role of the World College of Mayors in bridging local government leadership with national development priorities, particularly in tourism-led economic growth.
In a statement welcoming the engagement, the Secretary-General of the World College of Mayors, Alhassan Abdallah Musah, said:
“The World College of Mayors is fully committed to working with the Ghana Tourism Authority to position Ghana as a globally competitive tourism destination. This engagement reflects our belief that city leadership and tourism development must go hand in hand. Through strategic planning, mayoral diplomacy, and international partnerships, we are confident that Ghana’s rich cultural heritage, history, and hospitality can be amplified across global city networks to drive sustainable tourism growth and economic opportunity.”
The proposed collaboration is expected to result in a joint strategic framework that will include international tourism promotion campaigns, mayoral tourism forums, cultural festivals, and structured city-to-city tourism initiatives aligned with Ghana’s national tourism objectives.
Both institutions expressed optimism that the partnership will contribute to sustainable tourism development, job creation, and increased international arrivals, while strengthening Ghana’s position as a leading tourism destination in Africa.
Further engagements and formalization of the partnership are anticipated in the coming months.
